Success for SULF: better migration rules for foreign doctoral candidates and researchers
The government recently announced that it has decided present a Bill to the parliament with proposals that aim to improve the legislative conditions for foreign researchers, doctoral candidates and students.
“It is extremely gratifying that politicians have taken on board SULF's massive criticism of how migration legislation impacts foreign doctoral candidates and researchers,” says Robert Andersson, chief negotiator at SULF. “We have lobbied hard for the issues of our members and defended the interests of the higher education sector, and as a result of our efforts, we will now see real change.”
However, certain problems remain that this Bill does not solve, such as the issue of the deportation of teenagers, which has negative effects for foreign researchers and doctoral candidates.
It is proposed that the legislative changes will come into force on 11 June 2026.
