New unemployment insurance rules and improved income insurance

News

On 1 October 2025, new legislation on unemployment insurance came into force. The main changes are that you qualify for compensation on the basis of your income instead of the time you have worked; that the length of your membership of the unemployment insurance fund affects the level of benefits; and that the number of months you have had income determines the length of your benefit entitlement period. If you have already received a benefit entitlement decision dated no later than 30 September 2025, you will continue to be covered the by rules that apply before 1 October. Note also that the new unemployment insurance rules apply to all decisions made by the unemployment fund on or after 1 October, even if you became unemployed before that date.

Improved income insurance

In connection with the introduction of the new Unemployment Insurance Act, SULF's income insurance for members has been improved. The income insurance is included in your SULF membership automatically and at no extra cost, and the updated conditions make it even better. If you are covered by the new provisions of the Unemployment Insurance Act, you will be entitled to receive compensation for up to 175 days instead of the current maximum of 150 days. Income insurance cover applies to people who have been a member of both SULF and the unemployment insurance fund for at least 12 months and who have worked for at least 11 months during this qualifying period.
