SULF statement in support of peace and academic freedom in Gaza

News

The SULF Congress has ratified decisions that clarify the association’s position with regard to the conflict in Gaza. These decisions reinforce SULF’s focus on the defence of academic freedom and our solidarity with researchers, university teachers and students affected by the conflict. We have also clarified and strengthened SULF’s role as an unequivocal and committed voice on international issues related to academic freedom and human rights.

Wars and conflicts not only cause human suffering, but also endanger academic freedom, freedom of expression and the right to education. These rights are crucial to ensure pluralistic debate and to create conditions for long-term peace and societal development. We demand that the right to academic freedom and freedom of expression be granted to all researchers and university teachers, regardless of their views on the Gaza conflict.

SULF joins Education International and ETUCE in calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a lasting ceasefire to protect civilian lives and allow access to humanitarian assistance. We also reiterate the importance of protecting educational institutions in accordance with international humanitarian law, as education is a powerful resource for building peace and promoting social cohesion.

Our commitment to academic freedom and human rights will continue. Together with our colleagues in the global trade union movement and Scholars at Risk, we are working to build a future where education and knowledge are a path to peace and justice.

Statement issued by the SULF Executive Committee, 5 December 2024.
