Improved migration rules for doctoral candidates and researchers

Nyhet

Last week all parties in the parliament voted for the proposal on improved migration rules for doctoral candidates and researchers. All details are not in place until the goverment has taken their decision on changes in "utlänningsförordningen" so we will have to wait for a complete picture. Rules that will be introduced there include details on the income requirement for PR and the limitation for students to work more than 15 hours per week (with exeption for e.g. employment as doctoral candidate).

In any event the changes are not perfect but the situation will at least be much better than today from June 11th. Below you can find some of the most important changes.

  • It will be possible to, in some cases, get PR after three years
  • It will, in some cases, be possible to get PR also when you have a valid temporary permit
  • It will be easier to change from one type of permit to another from Sweden (also for family members)
  • Doctoral candidates will be able to get residence permit for research and not only for studies
  • A job-seeker permit can be granted for up to 18 months instead of 12 months as today
  • It will be possible to change from a job-seeker permit to a permit for doctoral studies or research from Sweden (valid already from June 1st)

SULF will update the information as soon as we have all details but until then you can watch our webinar were we went through the proposals and some other changes that might come due to other proposals.
